BLOOD PRESSURE

Blood pressure is determined by measuring the force of flowing blood against the artery walls. It is represented by two numbers. The top number is the systolic pressure, when the heart is contracting to pump blood throughout the body. The bottom number is the diastolic pressure, when the heart is resting between pumps. High blood pressure, or hypertension, may be considered a “silent killer” because it has no outward signs or symptoms but can be fatal. Uncontrolled, it can lead to multiple life threatening conditions including heart attacks and strokes. Hypertension may be controlled through diet, exercise, and medication.

FLU SHOTS

Flu shots are an excellent benefit for both employees and employers. The number of sick days taken by employees because of the flu can be reduced through flu vaccination. There is no better way for your company to improve its chances of avoiding the flu than setting up a flu shot clinic right in your office. Many employees who will not take the time to seek a flu shot elsewhere will take advantage of the opportunity to receive it so conveniently.

HEARING TESTING & EDUCATION

Hearing Awareness is an interactive education session, which addresses an often overlooked health issue – noise induced hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is the most common cause of hearing deficit. Over time, continuous exposure to loud sounds will affect an individual’s ability to hear normal conversation in a room with background noise, which is frustrating and will make everyday conversation difficult. Did you know that listening to music or the television at 95 decibels for 4 continuous hours could cause hearing loss? Did you know that the average personal music player with headphones, on a 5 out of 10 volume setting, is 94 decibels? The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has established sound level/duration guidelines that illustrate the amount of time an individual can be exposed to a particular volume (dB) before permanent hearing damage occurs. Technicians will perform hearing tests, checking various frequencies.

HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT

Health Risk Assessment (HRA) questionnaires bridge the gap between lifestyle and health status by relating an individual’s current habits and routines to his/her actual health (i.e., cholesterol level, blood pressure, etc.). Detailed reports, with recommendations for improvement, are produced for each individual who completes an HRA. They include sections on various aspects of life with questions on their own health history, diet, activity level, mental health and other health related issues about daily living, safety and habits. Clinical data (i.e., blood pressure, cholesterol, body fat, etc.) can be collected during a health fair or self reported. Aggregate reports, which detail characteristics of your work force as a whole, can be sent directly to your company. This allows you to detect the over-all needs of your employees and can guide your company in developing proactive education sessions. Results are ready within minutes so we can fully explain results and provide health coaching.

BODY COMPOSITION

Excess body fat is linked to major physical threats including heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Keeping body fat in a healthy range will lower the risk of developing these diseases. Measurement is quick and simple using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) or skin fold calipers. BIA is primarily used because of its practicality when screening large groups of people in an efficient and least intrusive manner. The participant grips the handles of a small appliance, which passes an extremely weak electrical current (500 mA, 50 KHz) that is not at all felt, through the body. BIA measures the resistance the body gives the current, as lean and fat tissue differ in conductivity. This screening tool therefore is able to provide an estimation of the percent of the individual’s mass made up of fat in a tangible form.

OSTEOPOROSIS/BONE DENSITY

Osteoporosis is a disease that results in decreased bone density, or thickness, and therefore attributes to weak and fragile bones. It may also be considered a “silent disease” because, if left untreated, it can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. Osteoporosis has primarily been considered a disease of older women. However, with increased life-expectancy, poor nutrition (particularly during childhood), and the advent of certain medications, individuals of all ages and both sexes may be at risk.

How are people screened?

Osteoporosis screening (bone density testing) is a non-invasive procedure that requires a single bare foot and is usually complete in less than one minute. It works by measuring the density of the heel bone using ultrasound. It compares individual results with research established norms. The risk of developing osteoporosis and the odds of fracturing a bone in the future may be predicted. Bone density may improve through non-invasive means such as proper nutrient supplementation and weight bearing exercise.

CHOLESTEROL TESTING/LIPID PROFILES

The purpose of cholesterol testing and lipid profiling is to identify individuals at risk for coronary and vascular disease so that the appropriate interventions may be initiated. High cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for coronary heart disease. That test includes total cholesterol (TC), HDL (good cholesterol), LDL (bad cholesterol) TC/HDL ratio, and triglyceride measurements. The most common cholesterol test in a health fair type setting includes TC and HDL and is often combined with glucose (blood sugar) testing for diabetes, since it is checked in the same manner. The first step to reducing high cholesterol, and thereby reducing the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, learning what your results are. Lifestyle Improvements offers fasting and non fasting tests via finger stick with an onsite cholesterol screening system. We also provide finger-stick testing for A1c, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), and Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test results.

With Onsite Screening System

This is the most convenient cholesterol screening method to provide during a workday. A finger stick blood sample is obtained and results are available in just a couple of minutes. This system is available for fasting and non fasting tests. There is only one component related to cholesterol screening, triglycerides, which requires fasting for more accurate results. Therefore, since testing triglycerides is not as common in health fair settings, fasting is usually not necessary. Likewise glucose is used for diabetes screening. Fasting is generally recommended for glucose testing, though not mandatory in a health fair setting.

PUMONARY FUNCTION TESTING

Pulmonary function tests are also called lung function tests, and they evaluate how well your lungs work. The tests determine how much air your lungs can hold and how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs. The tests can identify lung problems, and assess how effectively treatment for a lung disease may be working.
